Carmen and Jorge’s Journey Map

The piece shown above was created for my WRA 841- Professional Writing course, taught by Dr. Ben Lauren. The piece itself is a journey map designed to show the experience of two individuals named Carmen and Jorge as they use their medical insurance’s ride-share feature for the first time. One very strong theme of this class is a focus on people and story, leaning heavily into User Experience. Because of this I felt it important to interview real people to create my journey map.

I chose my grandparents for this assignment, since I knew they had just had this experience. We group-called for a while and I asked questions about how they learned about the service, what steps they needed to take in order to use it, and about its ease of use. Then I got to work on actually crafting the map and then shared it with them. The reasoning behind this was because I wanted this to be a collaborative effort in which my grandparents had agency over their story instead of just being objects of study.

This is a course I’m currently taking as I finish this portfolio. If it were a course I had already finished, maybe I would have chosen to include our final project, which is a portfolio with all the pieces I created in it plus an exploration of my writing process, instead of just this one piece. Overall I’m happy with what I was able to include.
